Voting Information

Polls are open on Election Day from 6 AM – 7 PM. As long as you are in line by 7 PM you will be able to vote. Be sure you know your voting rights ahead of the election.

Check or Update Your Registration

To be able to vote in person, by mail-in ballot, or by absentee ballot, you must be registered to vote.

If you’re not registered, you can do so online, by filling in this form, or in person until July 24, 2026. Find location-specific information below. You may also register to vote at your local Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office.

Request an Absentee Ballot

Your application for a mail-in or absentee ballot must be received by your county election board by Friday, July 24, 2026 at 5 PM for the August 4, 2026 primary election.

Please note that if you vote by mail your ballot must be received by your local general registrar no later than 12 PM on the third day following Election Day. Having the ballot postmarked by the deadline does not count if the ballot is still received after the deadline.

You also have the option to vote early in Virginia. Early voting is open between September 19 and November 1, 2025. 

Contact your local registrar’s offices to find early voting polling places. (The local registrar offices information for York, Hampton, and Poquoson is outlined in detail below.)

Voter ID Requirements

Anyone voting in person will be required to show identification. Any voter who does not present acceptable identification can sign a statement that they are the named registered voter who they claim to be.

Acceptable forms of identification are listed at the Virginia Department of Elections page and include Virginia state-issued driver’s license or ID card, student ID, passport, and more.
